Heading south to the River Thames

Okay, on my way south. Going to make it a reasonably intense trip, don’t want to dilly-dally in case there’s a problem on the way (see below). Lots of lovely views on the way. A bit of variable weather but some rain is welcome after the drought last year. Hopefully the canals will stay open!

I thought these were cows until I looked closer! (Water Buffalo)

I spent a night in a lovely little village called Cropredy and had a fantastic visit with Martyn and Amanda! We had originally met in 2018 on the Hatton flight which included an epic pub visit. We’ve stayed in touch ever since!

There was, of couse, a church to visit!

Many of the homes and buildings still had thatch roofs!

While I was at Cropredy, I got word that there was a damaged lock up ahead, closing the navigation. I decided to continue on to the site, I thought I might as well be at the head of the line once it was fixed. Apparently a boater had tied to the rod that lifts the gate paddle (to drain the lock) and just drove away. It pulled the paddle right out of its frame and bent the connecting rod.

It ended up being about three days between the damage, the inspections, positioning a repair boat, and getting a crew on site to fix it. Not bad considering it was pretty remote.

Meshing the winding gear to the connecting rod

So I could finally move on. I headed straight to Aynho, a wharf and services point I had been to before. It’s a great spot to restock and refill. I got everything I needed; pump out, fuel and water fill, garbage disposal, and grocery delivery. Alll set for the next month or more!

As I write this, I just got a notice from the Canal and River Trust. There’s a lift bridge up ahead that’s closed! Apparently a vehicle hit it. The road is closed too so I’m sure it’ll be a high-priority repair. I’m hoping… πŸ™‚

  1. Hi mate, glad to see you back on the Cut again.

Those church windows, just amazing. Can you share anything about them?

So why in (insert diety of your choice)’s name, would some pillock have thought that was an appropriate place to tie-up, and then add insult to injury by pulling away while still attached. There are quite appropriate names for people that would do things like that but I don’t think I need to share them because you probably already worked out what you think of them.

Enjoy your journey, and the very pleasant interruptions that CR and T have put in place just for your travelling pleasure. πŸ™‚
